  • Wiper arm malfunction

The pin in the wiper arm came out, might be able to fix it but replaced the wiper arm with a working one for now.

  • Then vs now

a side by side comparison of what the engine looked like when I purchased the 62 bug and what it currently looks like.

  • distributor cap clip replaced

Broken distributor cap clip replaced, I have an extra one now, you never know when you might need it.

  • electronic ignition replaced, bug fired up! Broke something else!

Electronic ignition module replaced since I hooked it up backwards last week, lol

Finally got to start it with the new carb on! Fired right up! Just need to let it warm and tune it.

Also broke a distributor cap clip!

The original style inlet is often loose, can come out and start a engine fire. The rebuilt German carburetor on this upgrade has the screwed in barbed style fiting, see below and images.

    “Screwed in barbed fittings,
Carburetor is tapped for the threads and the barbed fitting is screwed in for security. This replaces the push fit fitting that sometimes become loose.”

  • carburetor swap!

The bocar 34 pict 3 replaced with a rebuilt solex 34 pict 3.

  • End of the year maintenance

It’s been two years since we had those front disc brakes installed, so it was time to get that brake fluid flushed, the bug wasn’t downshifting into 2nd gear correctly and I suspected the shift rod bushing was worn out, after doing some internet research I came across a delrin bushing upgrade and decided to go for that. The suspension had a consistent squeak and was resolved by greasing the front beam. The repair shop also investigated the engine oil leaks and found several areas of concern, the push rod tubes were replaced, oil changed, valves adjusted, and sump plate cleaned up and reinstalled.

  • Engine maintenance and upgrades

Image of the 62 bug engine, the top one is the current photo.

Switched out the generator for a alternator with wire protectors, new electrical wires, eliminated the voltage regulator, new fresh air hoses with the proper seals, switched out the 009 distributor for one that has a vacuum advance with electronic ignition, fuel lines, fuel filter, air filter, engine seal fixed, new coil.

  • Let the fun begin

It’s that time of the year! Oil changed, valves adjusted, replaced a bad heater hose, new distributor cap etc…ready for another year of fun with the 62 bug.
